- 1... PREFACE
- Did you know that a positive ethical perspective of a company
- must be continually articulated?
- As of 1990, 36.9% of organizations with more than 100 employees
- provide ethics training. This kit might be used to help individuals
- handle tough decisions; nurture a sense of conscience in the
- organization; use the PC as a host for your unique company code of
- ethics; explain secular incentives for 'doing the right thing'.
- Especially in a time of growing national diversity and less
- parental guidance, where the population does not necessarily share
- a common moral orientation, it is important to stress standards of
- acceptable behavior.
- The shell supplied here permits the trainer to modify text
- files so that the ethics lessons are customized to suit the needs
- of his organization. Training via software permits just-in-time
- training capability and is self-paced. You can use your PC's for
- more than spreadsheets, databases, and word processing! If ethics
- orientation sessions are held in your organization then the kit
- might be used by attendees prior to the meeting.

- 4... INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
- INSTALLATION:
- This procedure is to be done by the PC systems administrator
- or the user if there is no administrator.
- Please use the mkdir command to set up a directory by typing
- the following command at the DOS prompt:
- MKDIR C:\ETHIK
- Then insert the aware diskette into drive A:, and use the following
- command to copy all of the necessary files to your hard disk:
- COPY A:\*.* C:\ETHIK\*.*.
- You are now ready to run. There is no requirement for decompression
- of files or other additional steps. If your hard drive is not
- designated as C:, you should substitute the appropriate letter in
- place of the "C" in the previous commands.
- Be sure to store the original diskette in a safe
- place as an archival backup.
-
- OPERATION:
- Invocation:
- The user must set his directory to the ETHIK subdirectory by
- typing issuing this command from the DOS prompt:
- CD C:\ETHIK . The program may then be invoked by
- typing 'AWARE' followed by carriage return:
- AWARE <cr>
-
- Selection Options:
- The program is menu driven. A mouse may be used as a selection
- device instead of using the up and down arrow keys. Some of the
- displays are controlled by a timer, in which case it is useless to
- hit return until the animation sequences complete. There is a
- program option on the EXIT selection to HIT ESC instead of ENTER to
- EXIT the program. If ENTER is pressed then MUSIC will emanate along
- with animation. If ESC is pressed, then the program is immediately
- exited without the sound and the animation sequence. The windowed
- text fields may be viewed by scrolling with the PageUp and PageDown
- keys or the UpArrow and Down Arrow keys for a line-by-line scroll.
-
- A list of files or an inventory of the files which must be in the
- ETHIK subdirectory is included here. Absense of these files may
- cause the program to abort or malfunction.

- The .DAT files explained below in Section 5 are also required.
- All files which are NOT .DAT files must be left intact and
- unaltered!
-
-
- 5... TAILORING OF LESSONS FOR UNIQUE COMPANY REQUIREMENTS
- The text files may be modified to suit the needs of the
- particular user company. The files provided here are a database for
- ethics issues. The trainer may remove or add information as he sees
- fit with the remaining screens and the menus serving as a shell.
- It is suggested that the original .DAT files be left alone intact
- and as delivered on the supplied media. The .DAT files copied and
- stored on the hard disk (and subsequently on the media that you use
- for distribution within your company) are the ones to modify.
- There is a SIZE LIMITATION of 6 windowed screens(about 120 lines)
- due to memory requirements. This means that if you have a .DAT file
- exceeding the size limit, the remaining excess will not appear in
- the scrolled window when the program runs.
-
- The mechanics of modification are to use a text editor such as
- EDIT and use ASCII characters (Alphabetic, numeric and punctuation-
- characters only). Special formating characters such as TABs are not
- to be used (Do not Use Word Perfect). You may enter up to 61
- characters per line. These will be visible in the text windows.
-
- Shown at the end of this section is a list of the files and
- their titles that will appear in the scrolled windows along with
- the window title. These are the only files available for modifica-
- tion. CODE.DAT and BUILD.DAT are the most likely files that you
- would modify. If you were to add another definition of ethics, you
- would insert your definition in the file, ETHIC.DAT. You will
- perhaps totally replace the material for CODE.DAT with your own
- (abbreviated) code of ethics for your company. You may also want to
- put specific conduct for your organization in the BUILD.DAT file.
-
- Example of Modification 1:
- A sample modification would be to invoke 'EDIT', open your
- version of BUILD.DAT (not the version on the distribution media) on
- your C drive in directory C:\ETHIK and then insert your paragraph
- about performance reviews as follows after the appropriate text,
- and then save the file as a new
- C:\ETHIK\BUILD.DAT
-
- * GIVE PEOPLE CREDIT FOR EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE
- AND IDEAS.
- Performance reviews for each employee here at XYZ <--- sample
- are to be conducted by supervisors in June and inserted
- December and returned to personnel for filing after material
- being signed by the employee, the supervisor, and
- the branch chief.
-
-
-
- Example of Modification 2:
- Suppose that you wished to add the definition below (or one of
- your own creation) to the ETHIC.DAT file. Then again you would
- invoke 'EDIT' ,open ETHIC.DAT ,append the material after Sam
- Butler,save the file as
- C:\ETHIK\ETHIC.DAT
-
- ... Sam Butler
- ETHICS PERTAINING TO WORKER MANAGEMENT ACCORDING <--- sample
- TO A JAPANESE PROVERB : appended
- If he works for you, you work for him. material.
-
- INVENTORY of .DAT MODIFIABLE FILES
-
- POSIT DAT Results from Ethical Decisions
- NEGAT DAT Eliminate the Negative
- WHY DAT Why is there a Crisis in Ethics?
- BUILD DAT How to Improve the Climate
- CASES DAT Cases of Integrity
- CODE DAT Standards of Conduct - a sample abbreviated
- company code of ethics. You may wish to
- replace the entire file with the code for
- your organization (up to 120 lines).
- ETHIC DAT What is Ethics?
- PROBS DAT Most Common Dilemmas
- MACHIN DAT Machine Malice and Misuse
